The Consensus Practices and Advocacy Group
In Occupy 1.0 we often used "modified consensus" (90% consenting majority); this unfortunately often degenerated into a tyranny of the majority through attempts to secure block-proof majorities and fostered a winner-take-all culture at assemblies, thus marginalizing valid minority concerns.Also absent from consensus process to date has been a detailed and precise written commitment as to what shared guidelines we hold in Occupy (the laudable "Principles Of Solidarity" notwithstanding...) This group is researching consensus methodology to in turn become proficient in educating others in its use and possibly assist with its implementation in Occupy Wall Street. By establishing a clear and well-defined common ground of shared beliefs and guidelines for ethical behavior a group can arrive at a methodology and consequential rules for consensus process that will make for more effective and productive decision-making bodies at Occupy Wall Street.
